From Community Memory
Having been nominated for a Grammy Award and winning a Tony Award is an accomplishment very few individuals can lay claim to. But for Verulam born writer, director and composer, Mbongeni Ngema, these are just two of the notches in his belt.
Ngema has made his mark in South Africa and internationally by producing work reflective of South Africa life: Asinamali (1987), Sarafina (1988), Circle of Life: African Voices(1995), Mama (1996) and, most recently, The Lion of the East, a play commissioned by the Mpumalanga provincial government to commemorate the life of ANC struggle icon Gert Sibande. Ngema is regarded by many as a theatrical innovator.
